The paper examines the information industry particularly as it relates to technological advancement.
The digital electronic has been the dominant technology for every existing information - based business,a realignment of the broader information industry has become inevitable.
There is every indication that in the next ten to fifteen years,the world wil undergo one of the history's greatest technological transformations as the infromation"mega - industry" undergoes a rapid and fundamental transformation.
Information- based business are becoming increasingly crucial to ourcommercail and social lives,inefficiency in the information market place are becoming less tolerable.
The information industry is today characterized by significant waste of economic and ecological resources ,inadequate matching of information with the need of the recipients, severe time and place constraints on information access and availability,cumbersome and expensive physical infrastructures for information distribution and inefficient information distribution.
The components of today's information industry includes content (creation and collection), display(devices),
sore(memory devices),process(applications),distribute(transport).
The structural transformation of the information industry has become inevitable. A crucial core competence for most companies is a mastery of the enabling technologies that help them create,produce and distribute their products and services.
The impact of the information industry will be pervasive throughout other industries, given the extent to which electronic technologies can fuse with other technologies,it grows fairly consistently behaving like a portfolio of securities,it is made up of different segments and organized on the basis of information form,companies within the industry tends to focus on busines opportunities related to a single form of information,such as voice,text,image,audio/video,or data.
The emergence of the new information industry has remarkably improved the retrieval and utilization of online information.Today scholarly information is increasingly being proiduced in digital formats,almost everyone involve in the knowledge process, prefers the electronic form,transformations had already began,
evidence is the fact that Americans now spend over a trillion dollars a year on information - related goods and services.
CRITICISM:
Significant developments are expected in the new information industry eventhough the future use of computers are viewed by some people with optimism while other believe that computers and technology are likely to be the curse of humanity,which view optimism or pessimism - will prevail?predictions of each group will become facts or fables only if people make them so.An enlightened citizenry,aware of the dangers.can bring about the optimistic version.as long as an important resource is supplied to us when and where we need it,in the right quantity and quality,and at a resonable cost,we tend to take the resource for granted,several weaknesses have been encountered with earlier information systems.Everyone knows thatInformation is the substance of all human intellectual activity,therefore the attempt to harness and transform information is very vital,history records,in a relatively unfavourable light,such as Dark Ages following the fall of the Roman Empire when European political and religious leaders reduced the tempo of change,but it can hardly be said today that the tempo of change has diminished,rather we are now living in a time when revolutionary technological,social and economic changes are taking place more quickly than ever before in the information industry.
